BUILD A PREDOMINANTLY UPPER EXTREMITY/HAND-FOCUSED PRACTICE
Shriners Children’s St. Louis is seeking a full-time Pediatric Upper Extremity/Hand Surgeon to support the continued growth and evolution of its orthopedic program.
This opportunity combines a predominantly upper extremity/hand-focused practice with a balanced weekly schedule and the support of an established multidisciplinary care team. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical care for pediatric patients while helping advance the program through quality improvement, education, research, and professional collaboration.
Shriners Children’s provides specialty care to children up to age 18, regardless of their families’ ability to pay or insurance status. Its culture emphasizes compassion, integrity, accountability, innovation, evidence-based practice, education, and research.
THE PRACTICE
Approximately 80–90% of clinical time will be dedicated to the surgeon’s primary area of expertise, with the remaining 10–20% focused on general pediatric orthopedics based on patient demand.
A typical week includes:
• Two dedicated operating room block days
• Two full clinic days
• One flex day for administration, program development, research, or other nonclinical activities
Operating room block time is allocated according to subspecialty needs and patient volume.
Surgeons work within a collaborative care model supported by Physical and Occupational Therapy, Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services, and 3.0 FTE Advanced Practice Providers.
Call is shared on a rotating basis and is home-based, with no trauma or emergent responsibilities.
Outreach clinics are primarily covered by Advanced Practice Providers, allowing surgeons to focus on onsite operative and clinical care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for pediatric patients with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions
• Provide evidence-based surgical and nonsurgical management
• Deliver preoperative, postoperative, inpatient, and outpatient care
• Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards
• Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, and other specialists
• Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance
• Maintain accurate and timely electronic health record documentation
• Contribute to medical education, research, and scholarly activities as appropriate
• Meet established productivity, quality, and institutional performance standards
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have:
• An MD or DO from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited orthopedic surgery residency
• Completion of an upper extremity or hand fellowship
• Board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery
• Eligibility for active, unrestricted medical licensure in Missouri
• Eligibility for active DEA registration
• BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS certification
• Eligibility for hospital credentialing and clinical privileges
• Expertise in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management
• Effective communication and counseling skills when working with children and their families
• The ability to function effectively in a multidisciplinary care environment
Additional fellowship training in pediatric orthopedic surgery is preferred but not required.
One to three years of post-fellowship or equivalent pediatric orthopedic experience is preferred. Recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on their training and clinical exposure.
COMPENSATION
The annual compensation range is $421,808.40–$703,014. Compensation is determined by relevant experience and departmental equity.
