GROW A PEDIATRIC SPINE PRACTICE IN ST. LOUIS
Shriners Children’s St. Louis is seeking a full-time Pediatric Spine Surgeon to support the continued growth and evolution of its orthopedic program.
This position offers the opportunity to develop a predominantly pediatric spine-focused practice while working within a collaborative, mission-driven environment. The surgeon will provide evidence-based operative and nonoperative care while contributing to quality, education, research, and program development.
Shriners Children’s provides specialty care to children up to age 18, regardless of their families’ ability to pay or insurance status. Its physicians are part of a culture that values compassion, integrity, accountability, innovation, critical thinking, and clinical excellence.
THE PRACTICE
Approximately 80–90% of clinical time will be dedicated to pediatric spine care, with the remaining 10–20% focused on general pediatric orthopedics based on patient demand.
A typical week includes:
• Two dedicated operating room block days
• Two full clinic days
• One flex day for administration, program development, research, or other nonclinical activities
Operating room block time is allocated according to subspecialty needs and patient volume.
The orthopedic team is supported by Physical and Occupational Therapy, Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services, and 3.0 FTE Advanced Practice Providers.
Call is shared on a rotating basis and is home-based, with no trauma or emergent responsibilities. Outreach clinics are primarily covered by Advanced Practice Providers, allowing surgeons to concentrate on onsite clinic and operative care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Evaluate and treat pediatric patients with spine and other orthopedic conditions
• Develop individualized surgical and nonsurgical treatment plans using current standards of care
• Provide preoperative, postoperative, inpatient, and outpatient management
• Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards
• Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, and other specialists
• Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance
• Maintain complete and timely documentation in the electronic health record
• Contribute to medical education, research, and scholarly activities as appropriate
• Meet established productivity, quality, and institutional performance standards
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have:
• An MD or DO from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited orthopedic surgery residency
• Completion of an accredited pediatric orthopedic fellowship
• Completion of an accredited pediatric spine fellowship
• Board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery
• Eligibility for active, unrestricted medical licensure in Missouri
• Eligibility for active DEA registration
• BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS certification
• Eligibility for hospital credentialing and clinical privileges
• Expertise in pediatric orthopedic surgical techniques, operative planning, and perioperative management
• Effective communication and counseling skills when working with children and their families
• The ability to manage complex cases within a multidisciplinary environment
One to three years of post-fellowship or equivalent pediatric orthopedic experience is preferred. Recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on their training and clinical exposure.
COMPENSATION
The annual compensation range is $421,808.40–$703,014. Compensation is determined by relevant experience and departmental equity.
